What is the APDA?

The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. was founded in 1961 to “ease the burden and find a cure” for PD. Headquartered in New York, it focuses its energies on research, patient support, advocacy, education and raising public awareness of the disease. The National office coordinates the efforts of 65 chapters, 57 information & referral centers and 250 affiliated support groups across America.

Each year, the APDA scientific advisory board reviews grant requests and submits recommendations for funding researchers whose work shows promise of making scientific breakthroughs for finding improved treatments for PD. In 2003-2004, its budget exceeded $2.7 million for research and $2 million for patient support.

The APDA is the largest grassroots organization in the U.S. dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s disease. Its education program provides information and resources to PWP’s, their families, friends, and medical professionals and enhances public education and awareness of the disease.
